Role Model of the Month-Vivienne Westwood

Each month I tell my followers of an inspirational person who deserves a honorable mention, and there's no one better to start off with then the inspiration for this blog...

   Vivienne Westwood
Vivienne Isable Swire was born on  the 8th April 1941 (two weeks after the outbreak of WW2). When she was 17 her family moved to London and she studied at 'Harrow School of Art' but she left the school after 1 term saying...

"I didn't know how a working-class girl like me could possibly make a living in the art world"

She studied as a teacher and eventually became a teacher. But her 'passion for fashion' was not destroyed, she started to make jewelry which she sold at portobello road.
In 1961 she met her husband to be Derek Westwood, she made her own dress for the wedding.
She later met Malcolm Mclaren and left her husband for him.
She was deeply interested in Punk fashion and said...

"I was messianic about punk, seeing if one could put a spoke in the system in some way"

She used safety pins, razor blades, bicycle or lavatory chains on clothing and spiked dog collars for jewelry, as well as outrageous make-up and hair which many thought was insane but caught on immediately and she became an icon. She and McLaren revolutionized fashion and has a huge impact in fashion today.
She now owns 5 shops. 3 in London, 1 in Leeds and 1 in Milan and she also owns many franchise stores. Her first catwalk was in 1981 and was inspired by Pirates.
She has often been involved in Political outbreaks and has inspired many to work in fashion. Both her sons have gone on to work in fashion.
 Gwen Stefani said...

'Vivienne Westwood is one of my all-time favourites. I'd give all my money to her and buy all her clothes!'

she got an OBE in 1992 and later an OBE for her services to fashion.
In her infamous punk style fashion...

The famous heels she designed that led to Naomi Campbell's big trip...

Looking fab on the catwalk ...

The dress she designed for Sex and the City, though she didn't like the end result the rest of us did!
